How to Protect Your Trophy From Field to Taxidermist

Velvet Is Extremely Delicate

Unlike hardened antlers after the velvet has been shed, velvet-covered antlers are soft and easily damaged. The velvet contains blood vessels and fine hair that create the distinctive appearance hunters admire.

Even minor bumps against trees, rocks, truck beds, or ATV racks can leave permanent scars or tear the velvet. Once it's damaged, those marks can be difficult for a taxidermist to completely repair.

Treat your buck with the same care you would give any prized possession.

Avoid Dragging the Deer

One of the quickest ways to damage velvet antlers is by dragging the deer across rough ground.

Branches, brush, tall weeds, fences, and rocks can scrape or tear the velvet before you even realize it's happening.

Whenever possible, transport the deer using equipment that keeps the head elevated and protected, such as:

Handle the Antlers as Little as Possible

Instead, lift or position the deer by supporting the head underneath the jaw or neck whenever practical.

Take Photos Before Moving the Deer

Before loading your buck for transport, spend a few extra minutes capturing quality photographs.

Natural lighting, a clean background, and proper positioning will help preserve memories that last a lifetime.

Take your time.

Straighten the ears.

Wipe away any blood around the mouth or nose.

Position the tongue inside the mouth.

Arrange the legs naturally if possible.

These small details often make the difference between an average photo and one you'll proudly display for years.

Keep the Trophy Cool

Heat is one of the biggest enemies of a velvet trophy.

During warm weather, try to cool the deer as soon as possible. Prompt field dressing also helps remove body heat and improves meat care. Fortunatley this isn't a problem at the Cuppen's Game Ranch as we have a cleaning/skinning station and freezer to prep your deer for the trip to the taxidermist.

If you're traveling a significant distance before reaching your taxidermist, keeping the entire deer cool is one of the best ways to preserve both the cape and the velvet.

Don't Attempt Home Preservation

Many hunters have watched online videos claiming velvet can be preserved at home.

While some methods may work under certain conditions, preserving velvet properly requires specialized knowledge and equipment. Professional taxidermists often use preservation techniques designed specifically for velvet antlers to ensure they retain their natural appearance for decades.

Attempting to preserve velvet yourself can lead to discoloration, shrinkage, insect damage, or even complete loss of the velvet.

Protect the Cape
